BizReport says more people paid their bills online than by check for the first time. Sorta like salsa outselling ketchup - had to happen sooner or later.
PBS will use streaming video on New Years Day (d'uh - even PBS watchers watch football - are they trying to get input from all their viewers or just those that don't like football?) and will air those same three pilots starting January 3 to see what their actual viewers want to see. The most successful will then go onward as a 10-week series. As Media Post pubs says, kinda brilliant to use their own viewers while the programs are still in development.
Burst Media, via MarketingVOX, points out some interesting numbers on online video:
About 6 in 10 online video viewers (56.3 percent) recall seeing advertisements in content they have watched.
One in four (25.7 percent) respondents who recall advertisements in online video content say they pay more attention to the video ad than they typically do to standard creative units on the same web page
About three quarters (77.5 percent) say such ads are intrusive, and nearly two-thirds (62.2 percent) say such ads disrupts their web experience
One-quarter (27.9 percent) of respondents who stop watching video content once they encounter an advertisement also say they immediately leave the website.
A few posts below, I posted about brand evangelism. Check out this Yahoo! study (via MarketingVOX) that says four of ten online buyers also use new media to promote the brand on their own. The article also mentions ClickZ that says these evangelist have a two to one rate of convincing family or friends to buy the same brand.
Marketing VOX reports on two studies, one from USC's Annenberg School saying there is an increase in online social activities. CNET has more on this. The other, mentioned by MarketingVOX, from Duke University, was reported in June, 2006 by Ohmy News (S. Korea), says Americans are becoming more isolated. ??? I have not seen the original studies, but I do know the more time I spend online, the less time I have for face-to-face social interactions. While one increases, the other decreases. Natch. The Duke study also mentions people becoming lonelier because of more work, longer commutes and later marriages. Okay, I can buy off on that, sorta. Here's a quote from Ohmy News: "So, on the surface it would appear that the Internet and all its social
networks, instant messaging services, and e-mail enhancements have made
it easier to develop friendships. However, this notion may be
misleading." They go on to say that as these online relationships grow the interpersonal social skills may decline. The operative word is "may." I think both are saying a lot of the same stuff and while one talks about the benefits of online, the other derides the downside. Like everything else, this coin has two sides.
Toddand posts a free class listing - many from Ivy league schools, that he proposes would be great major in communications and technology. He also references Technophilia that has a good-sized list of free courses available online. Were I to make a suggestion, it would be to include more on old-school media - not everything is on the web although a thrust toward new media is warranted.
The WSJ, via newsletter - Around the Net in Online Marketing, reports that online commerce was up over the critical weekend. Online spending for Black Friday was up 42% and Cyber Monday 24%.
Here it is, Cyber Monday, the Monday after Black Friday - the day Wal-Mart's servers got hit so hard they stalled. Wendy Davis reports that BF's online sales increased 42% over last year. Traffic was also up - depending on who was doing the measuring - between 2.7% (Hitwise) and 12% (Nielsen/NetRatings). Hitwise also reported, according to the article, a 11.8% increase on Thanksgiving Day. Hmmmm, looks like some folks were anticipating the heavy web activity.
