I like the concept of the new Mustang billboards - transparent. This and another were found at AdPunch. I like the palm and western theme, but cannot help wondering how they would handle the mid-Manhattan area using the same concept. Blurred while jammed up for an hour in traffic? Nah, pony cars aren't that fast.
Media Daily News reports that the Outdoor Advertising Association of America notes that longer periods of time in cars means there is an opportunity for their industry. While the longer time in cars is true, the other side of the story they, evidently, did not look into. Try some observation, folks, get out there in that mess and take a look around at what others are doing in their cars while they are driving or are logjammed on the freeway. Oh, you don't have time to because of the kids or car poolers are talking to you and one another? Oh, you can't because you are looking madly around you for a, momentarily, faster lane of traffic? Oh, you can't because you are yapping to the office, a colleague, family, friends or your stylist on your cell to let them know you are going to be late because of the delays? Oh, you can't because, because, because. That's the reality of what is going on out there. Those drivers are not lollygagging around looking at the scenery and for your billboards. They have much more important things on their minds. And, BTW, thanks for screwing up the scenery.
Todd and . . . wrote about another outdoor advertising medium: chalkvertising. Here is a sample of Julian Beever's work:
The crop circle of Firefox's logo was done back in August by 12 Firefox fans with some wood and time on their hands. The logo is approximately 30,000 square feet (visible from space?). Fans also put together enough cash to buy a two-page spread in the New York Times - and guess what? No PR firm, no PR agents, no Firefox behind these efforts - just loyal fans (and perhaps more than a few who are disgusted with the way Microsoft does business). Caffeine Marketing says, "By building a dedicated group of users or customers, small companies can create formidable brand power." Firefox, if I recollect correctly, has about 15% of the US browser share and into the 20% levels in Europe. Disclaimer: I am a Firefox advocate and a Linux (Ubuntu) advocate. I duess I would never qualify to be one of Edelman's Vista whores.
Having come across this article on micro-encapsulated bio-degradable tattoo inks, you could afford to sell your skin for advertising over a short time span. Of course, you would want to be paid enough for the removal.
Hey folks, now your local roadways can look just like the roads leading into Las Vegas! For a few more pennies a day, the advertisers can bombard you with multiple, glaring in your eyes signage in a single location virtually guaranteed to take your eyes off the road and cause you to have an accident. Hopefully, some injured motorist will sue the billboard companies for creating attractive nuisances, Of course these are designed, in part aren't they, to create accidents because, after all, any press resulting from said accident mentioning the advertiser and the sign company is good press, ain't it? If you have driven by the glaring, flashing signs like the ones near casinos in California (or for that matter at San Diego State University) you would understand that these are clearly hazards to the motoring pulic at night. Too damn much light in our eyes, you fools!
