PBS will use streaming video on New Years Day (d'uh - even PBS watchers watch football - are they trying to get input from all their viewers or just those that don't like football?) and will air those same three pilots starting January 3 to see what their actual viewers want to see. The most successful will then go onward as a 10-week series. As Media Post pubs says, kinda brilliant to use their own viewers while the programs are still in development.
While I do not see an end to TV clutter anytime soon, it looks like some of the big national news shows may see a more profitable role on single sponsorships. This practice would result in both fewer ads and more time for news and that is why you watch the news, isn't it? TV Watch reports that next week's NBC's "The Nightly News with Brian Williams" will have a single sponsor - Philips Electronics, for the entire week. Philips has done the same before.
